Multi-Session Support Group for Parents of Adults (30+)

Virtual

This “closed” support group is for parents who have an Autistic adult child 30+ years of age. Other adult family caregivers may also register for this group. “Closed” support groups are ideal for parents and other adult family caregivers who want to go beyond sharing their stories with newcomers each time at open support group meetings.

AANE support groups provide an opportunity for parents and family caregivers to voice their concerns and frustrations and celebrate hard-won and unexpected victories. Although each group will focus on different themes and questions, here are some of the most common ones:

Now that your child is an adult, how do you support and/or parent without power?
How do you keep the lines of communication open?
How can you help the Autistic adult find and sustain work and live independently?
How do you motivate them to expand their social network?
What types of services have other families used and what were the results?
How have other members tapped into health, income, housing, and other benefits?

Multi-Session Support Group for Autistic Parents

This is a Support Group for autistic adults who are parents. As an autistic individual, parenting brings with it a multitude of unique experiences and challenges. That’s why we’re here! Together we can share lived experiences and offer support to one another so we can grow and succeed in parenthood. Parents of all genders are welcome, whether your child is arriving soon, a toddler, in high school, or an adult themselves. This group is open to parents of all genders.

Multi-Session Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Interest Group for Adults

Virtual

This interest group is intended for post-high school adults who fulfill the player pre-requisites outlined below:

Participants need to have played Dungeons and Dragons before either at AANE or elsewhere.
They must also be familiar with character creation, general rules of D&D Edition 5, cooperation within a team, and following campaign rules and storyline.
Each participant is expected to attend all 8 meetings in order to help his/her team advance as far as possible in the campaign.
This interest series will be using a campaign selected by the Dungeon Masters. Participants must agree to follow the rules of the campaign at all times.
Because this is an interactive/collaborative game. Participants need to be able to participate fully in each game session.

Skill Building Workshop – Supporting Coaching Clients in Their Pursuit of Public Benefits for APCA Members

AANE is pleased to annouce the latest in its Skill Building for APCA Members series: Supporting Coaching Clients In Their Pursuit of Public Benefits. Coaching clients sometimes require government support for income, healthcare, housing, or other aspects of life. The pursuit of these benefits can be complex and overwhelming and often calls for expert assistance. This workshop will provide an overview of the public benefits landscape, along with strategies that coaches can implement when working with clients on goals related to their pursuit of benefits. The focus will include strategies to support clients while maintaining clear boundaries to protect the integrity of the coaching role.
Speaker
Jessica Cohen is the Associate Director of LifeMAP at the Association for Autism and Neurodiversity (AANE), as well as a LifeMAP coach. Jessica obtained her B.S.B.A. from Boston University School of Management and her J.D. from Northeastern University School of Law, and has been a practicing attorney and small business owner since 1997. As a coach, Jessica enjoys working with a variety of clients on goals related to executive functioning, social confidence, self-determination, and self-advocacy. Outside of AANE, Jessica continues to advise families on special education related matters, and regularly presents community workshops for the Federation for Children With Special Needs.

Building a Brain: Human Fetal Neural Connectomics

While we possess rather detailed understanding of select micro- and macroscopic processes of normal human brain development, we know far less about how brain changes relate to behavioral changes over the course of life from the prenatal period to early adulthood. This lack of understanding is especially pronounced in the very early years of human life, when change is most rapid and vulnerability heightened. The primary objective of my research is to characterize fundamental properties of human brain macroscale neural system development and examine how early experiences, beginning in utero, influence lifelong learning and neurological health. We are testing models in which early psychosocial stress and concomitant chemical exposure influence development of neural systems, particularly those that support the establishment of cognitive control and regulatory processes in childhood. Rigorous evaluation of emergent self-regulatory processes and their neurological and biobehavioral bases has potential to inform educational strategies and lead to biologically-informed behavioral interventions for those with enhanced risk.

Dates: 2/21, 2/28, 3/14, 3/21, 4/4, 4/11, 4/18 (Closed on March 7th and 28th)

FAST Fins does not offer swim lessons – participants must be able to swim and be safe in the water without flotation. FAST Fins is a swim team, not swim lessons. Not only do swimmers need to be able to swim, they need to WANT to swim. We understand that playing and splashing in the water is fun, but FAST Fins is a time set aside for swimming laps and working on technique to attain better skills and confidence in the water.

Spring Registration Opens Tuesday, January 7th in the Family Portal!

Eligibility
FOCUS Kid must be ages 5-29 years old at the start of the Swim Season.
Can swim in deep water without flotation or adult assistance
Able (and willing) to swim at least 25 yards (the length of the pool) without any assistance
Swim strokes do not need to be developed, but they must be able to swim on top of the water in a safe manner
Able to follow directions of safety and take instruction in a group setting
Be cooperative and follow directions in a group
