    Understanding Manifestation Determination Reviews (MDRs): Preparing, Participating, and Following Up - This brief session will provide parents and caregivers with a clear understanding of what a Manifestation Determination Review (MDR) is, when it is required, and how it protects students with disabilities during disciplinary actions. Participants will learn how to prepare for an MDR meeting, including what information to review, who to invite, and how to document connections between a child’s disability and the behavior in question.   • IEP meetings for your child with mental health needs

    Individualized Education Program (IEP) team meetings can be challenging when a child has complex mental health needs. This workshop will help parents prepare for a positive meeting to support their child’s mental health needs in school. It will include a discussion of an example IEP and explore what each section means, what parents need to know, questions to ask, and how to advocate for changes. Participants will also develop a greater understanding of what positive supports and interventions are available and how to navigate disagreements.

  • How to Support Your Child’s Vocabulary Development

    Fostering vocabulary development helps children with the acquisition of language. Language acquisition supports literacy skills as young children grow and develop. Participants will come away from this session with ways to incorporate language and vocabulary instruction in the home to support their children in the early and elementary grades. Presented by the Mid-West Family and Community Engagement Center.. Many of the programs at Starbridge are funded through the New York State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD). We are required to maintain documentation which shows that individuals who receive services are eligible for those services. Your information is kept confidential.     This workshop provides families with an introduction to their rights and responsibilities as parents of children with special needs.

    This workshop provides families with an introduction to their rights and responsibilities as parents of children with special needs under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), the NJ Code, and Section 504 of the Vocational Rehabilitation Act. Parents learn to identify their dreams and goals for their children, and learn laws and advocacy strategies that will help them help their children reach those goals. Parents of classified children and children who are having difficulty in school, but may not be classified, benefit from this training.
