Why Do Autistic People Stim?

 

Many autistic people engage in repetitive movements or behaviors known as stimming (short for self-stimulatory behavior).  In the past, these behaviors were often viewed as problematic and were discouraged by caregivers, researchers, and healthcare providers.  However, autistic self-advocates have helped reshape this perspective by emphasizing that stimming often serves important purposes, such as regulating emotions, managing sensory experiences, and expressing feelings.  As a result, stimming is increasingly recognized as a natural and beneficial part of the autistic experience rather than a behavior that should automatically be eliminated.

 

What is Stimming?

The term stimming is short for “self-stimulating behavior.”  Stimming includes repeated movements, sounds, or actions that can help a person feel calmer or more comfortable.  Stimming is usually associated with autism, but it can be performed by anyone who is sensitive to sensory information, needs help processing emotions, or would otherwise benefit from stimming.

There are many kinds of stimming.  Some involve the whole body, such as rocking back and forth or spinning in circles.  Others involve smaller movements, like tapping fingers, twisting hair, rubbing different textures, making repeated sounds, or spinning an object.

Many autistic people use different types of fidget toys to manage their stimming.  Fidget toys are small objects designed to keep your hands busy by allowing repetitive movements like spinning, squeezing, clicking, twisting, or popping.  People often use them to help channel restless energy, improve focus, or simply occupy their hands.  For some autistic people, using fidget toys to stim may make work, school, or other activities more manageable.

 

Why Do Autistic People Stim?

Autistic people may stim for many reasons.  Stimming can help someone:

  • Calm down when they feel stressed or anxious.
  • Handle loud sounds, bright lights, or other overwhelming sensory experiences.
  • Manage strong emotions like excitement, frustration, or happiness.
  • Stay focused or pay attention.
  • Express feelings that may be hard to put into words.
  • Maintain a sense of body position.

For many autistic people, stimming is a healthy way to regulate emotions and sensory experiences.  When the world feels overwhelming, repetitive movements can help autistic people manage sensory input and feel more in control of their responses to their surroundings.  Stimming can also help autistic people cope with strong emotions and express how they are feeling.  In addition, some autistic people experience differences in body awareness, so repetitive movements may help them feel more connected to their bodies.

 

What Benefits Does Stimming Provide?

Stimming can have many benefits. It may help autistic people:

  • Feel calmer during stressful situations.
  • Reduce anxiety.
  • Cope with sensory overload.
  • Stay focused on a task.
  • Express emotions safely.
  • Feel more comfortable and in control of their bodies.

Stimming is harmless and does not need to be stopped.  The only times that stimming may need to be adjusted or discouraged would be if it is harmful to the autistic person, harmful to others, or if it prevents the autistic person from doing things they want to do.  In those cases, a healthcare provider or therapist can help find safer, alternative ways to meet the same need.

 

The Bottom Line

Stimming is a normal part of life for many autistic people.  It is not something to be ashamed of.  Instead of trying to stop harmless stimming, it is important to understand why it happens and how it helps the person.  Supporting safe stimming can improve comfort, reduce stress, and help autistic people feel accepted.  Spreading the word about stimming and being a non-judgmental friend are both great ways to support autistic people in regaining power over the negative ideas surrounding stimming.
