We will discuss common misconceptions, the Autistic identity, and common Autistic traits, strengths, and challenges. This presentation is given by an Autistic adult and a Neurodivergent ally. You might enjoy this presentation and discussion if you are newly diagnosed, considering whether you may be autistic, or if you have only explored autism through a deficit lens in the past.
When a child qualifies for special education services, federal law requires the development of a document called an Individualized Education Program (IEP). The IEP serves as a roadmap for services, including important information about a child’s levels of performance and needs, as well as goals for the child. This workshop will prepare participants to actively participate on the IEP team. Many of the programs at Starbridge are funded through the New York State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD). We are required to maintain documentation which shows that individuals who receive services are eligible for those services. Your information is kept confidential. Thank you for providing this information.
Understanding Manifestation Determination Reviews (MDRs): Preparing, Participating, and Following Up - This brief session will provide parents and caregivers with a clear understanding of what a Manifestation Determination Review (MDR) is, when it is required, and how it protects students with disabilities during disciplinary actions. Participants will learn how to prepare for an MDR meeting, including what information to review, who to invite, and how to document connections between a child’s disability and the behavior in question. This 8-session AANE support group is designed for parents and caregivers of Autistic (or similarly neurodivergent) teens (age 14+) and adults who also identify as LGBTQ+. In this small, welcoming group setting, participants will have the opportunity to share experiences, access valuable resources, and build meaningful connection with others navigating similar journeys. Each session offers a supportive space to explore the unique intersections of neurodivergence and LGBTQ+ identity, while providing guidance, insight, and a sense of community. Advanced registration is required.
